I suppose I could update the site more often. But hey, come on down to the Pivot Center at the Cascade Aids Project offices (at 209 SW Fourth Avenue in downtown Portland) on Thursday August 5th from 6 - 9PM for the debut showing of Organ Players & Storytellers. It's good stuff.

I'm happy to say I've finally gotten a few pieces of art up for sale at my Etsy.com store; mostly affordable work for small spaces and kids' rooms. Please click the link to see what's in 'store'! Kurt Dahlke on Etsy!

Once again the Cascade Aids Project is hosting its Art For LIfe Auction, and once again, yours truly (and a couple of other members of Organ Players and Storytellers) will have a piece available for bidding. If you've got the scratch to support a great cause, please come on down and bid! Here's the link: http://www.capartauction.org/

Workin' with my buds as Organ Players & Storytellers.

February 2009

Quiet times in the old homestead. Slowly working on some 'affordable art' to be sold at Etsy dot com, like now is the time to try to sell art. Also slowly working on some designs to promote at Cafe Press dot com, also along a similar line of reasoning. Did you notice that I'm also slowly working on updating this site?

The piece to the left of this screen will be appearing in all its glory during September for The 2nd Annual Juried Show at The 100th Monkey Studios in Southeast Portland (110 SE 16th Avenue). I'd love to see you at the opening reception Friday, September 5th from 6 - 9 pm. The show will be up from September 5th to November 2nd.

I've two pieces, one old, one new, in the Do North exhibition at the IFCC. It's a great show celebrating North and Northeast Portland artists and creative leaders; I'm pleased to be a part and loving the new piece! I also have a show upcoming at Sydney's in July, which is something to which we can all look forward.

A collaborative project including me and Dave Trowbridge premiers April 3rd at Gallery 114, when you'll be able to meet both of us and enjoy some fine paintings. The Darlings of Portland combines two disparate art styles in a marriage that should be untenable. It's not. Please come and check it out in the central cube at Gallery 114.

It's times like this (any time I think about it) that I wonder; what makes 'good' art or a 'good' artist? Is it strong art history knowledge? Is it a rigorous work ethic? Is it being very active in the art scene? Hobnobbing? Is it making the best art you think you can make, and being very positive?

I am still trying to finish the renovation of the second story of my house, and learning how to be a stay-at-home-dad, but otherwise, the only thing of remote note is that I sold another piece at the Cascade AIDS Project auction, so I'm four for four in that count.

Career Suicide Department

I couldn't possibly fit this into an Artist's Statement, but I happen to have been thinking lately about how I derive a huge amount of inspiration not from looking at other art, but by listening to pop music. I like the vague, universal specicifity of pop lyrics, and the manipulation of simple musical elements to create seamless efficacy. A certain percentage of contemporary art (see Juxtapoz magazine) works this way, but, perversely, I don't fit that mold.

Nevertheless I'll keep working to make, in my milieu, work that is the contemporary corellary to Heart to Heart, say, by Kenny Loggins. There, I've just destroyed any credibility I might have once had ...

Give me a jingle if you want to 'talk art,' and check back sometime, maybe I'll have some cheese for you.
