My work explores a variety of contradictions, seeking out the intersections wherein those contradictions support each other, becoming interchangeable. The paintings are made on panels with a layer of joint compound as a surface. Gestures both under and outside of my control create a surface that informs every consecutive mark, including arcing graphite lines and various forms of applied acrylic paint, which soak into the surface and change over time. Within these few simple constraints, my process oriented work flirts with chance. Excruciatingly considered composition shares space with intuitive abstract expressionist marks, and chaotic motion intersects with bright, childlike colors. The work rewards a quick glance or deep introspection.
